July in the Cincinnati area brings beautiful summer days, but it also brings the intense heat and humidity that can turn a vibrant lawn brown almost overnight. If you’re noticing your grass struggling to stay green despite the summer sun, don’t worry—you aren't alone.
At Nienaber and Sons Lawn Care, we’ve seen how our local Ohio soil and unpredictable weather patterns affect lawns this time of year. To help you protect your investment, we’ve put together our top tips for surviving the July heatwave.
1. Raise Your Mowing Height
It might sound counterintuitive, but letting your grass grow a little taller during a heatwave is one of the best things you can do. Taller grass blades shade the soil, which helps retain moisture and prevents the roots from drying out too quickly. Try setting your mower deck one notch higher than usual.
2. Water Early and Deeply
If you are watering, the timing is everything. Always water between 5:00 AM and 9:00 AM. Watering in the heat of the day leads to rapid evaporation, and watering at night can invite fungal diseases. Aim for "deep and infrequent" watering rather than light, daily sprinklings to encourage deep root growth.
3. Leave the Grass Clippings
While it’s tempting to bag your clippings for a "clean" look, leaving them on the lawn acts as a natural mulch. This layer of organic matter helps keep the soil temperature down and returns vital nutrients back into your turf.
4. Hold Off on Fertilizing
When temperatures are consistently in the 80s and 90s, your grass is essentially in "survival mode." Avoid applying heavy nitrogen fertilizers right now, as this can force the grass to grow too quickly when it should be conserving energy, potentially leading to "burning" or lawn stress.
